The Local Organising Committee of the 2023 African Games have announced that the games will be held between March 8-23, 2024.
This follows the stakeholders’ decision to reschedule from August 4 to 19, 2023.
The announcement was made at a press conference on Tuesday night, following the conclusion of a two-day inspection by the Africa Union Sports Council.
Several factors, including petty disagreements and unreadiness of facilities, slowed the progress of organizing the competition until a meeting last week in Addis Ababa between the African Union (AU), the Association of National Olympic Committees (ANOCA), and the Association of African Sports Confederations (AASC).
Coordinator of the African Union Sports Council Dr. Decius Chipande acknowledged Ghana’s commitment to ensuring games are held successfully.
“I would like to thank The Local Organising Committee led by Dr. Ofosu Asare and his entire team, the Ministry of Youth and Sports led by Honourable minister Mustapha Ussif and the president of the republic for the great Hospitality that we’ve been accorded here in Ghana and the great investment that Ghana have put into hosting a successful 2023 African games.”
While the event serves as a 2024 Olympic games qualifying ground for 12 of the approximately 25 proposed disciplines, athletes are expected to arrive in Ghana between March 5-7, 2019.
