Minority Chief Whip Alhaji Mohammed Muntaka Mubarak has expressed hope that all the New Patriotic Party (NPP) Members of Parliament (MP) who are demanding the removal of Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta will vote secretly to have their demands met.
He said those MPs, over 80 in all, should be guided by “they themselves, and their God and their conscience” as the House on Thursday, December 8 considers the report of the ad hoc committee set up by the Speaker, Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin, to look into the motion of censure for the Finance Minister’s removal.
The motion was laid before the House last week and expected to be considered on Thursday.
According to the Minority Chief Whip, who is also the MP for Asawase Constituency, the decision on the eight-member ad hoc committee will be taken through secret balloting and that could see some Majority MPs voting for the motion.
“You know in secret ballot, you cannot guarantee what the next person next to you will be voting,” Alhaji Muntaka observed on TV3‘s Ghana Tonight on Wednesday, December 7.
“And we are very hopeful that the members on the Majority group that were vehemently calling for the removal of the Finance Minister will take advantage of the vehicle we are providing through Article 82 that when it comes to voting by secret, they will be there.”
He said it was as a result of secret balloting that led to the election of Speaker Bagbin, other than that “there was no way Speaker Bagbin will be the Speaker”.
The motion needs two-thirds of the membership of the House to be accepted.
“I am very hopeful that we will secure the minimum number of about 184 to remove the minister.”
Meanwhile, the Majority MPs have been cautioned by their party not to have anything to do with the motion.
As a result, many are predicting they will walk out when the report comes up for consideration.
