Not all seemingly successful members of the Akufo-Addo administration misconducted themselves, therefore, the new Mahama administration ought to carry out accountability exercises in ways that wouldn’t target innocent people, a United Kingdom-based Ghanaian economist and political observer, Michael Danquah has said.
Mr Danquah noted that in a bid to hold past government officials accountable, Mr Mahama will be pressured by his party members to go after people they may have bones to pick with.
If he succumbs to the pressure, then he would probably be committing the same “sins” that Akufo-Addo was accused of doing which means business as usual.
“Mr Mahama has promised us that he will do things differently. Without a doubt, the new administration should hold past officials and even officials of the new administration accountable but President Mahama would have to ensure that he does not come under pressure from his party people to target these officials.
“Mind you, not all of them misconducted themselves. If the accountability is not done properly, the new administration will suffer embarrassment in court,” Mr Danquah told 3news.com in an exclusive interview.
Regarding the defeat of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the 2024 elections, he expressed the view that Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia inherited the failings of President Akufo-Addo hence the defeat of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the just-ended general elections.
In the view of Danquah, Dr Bawumia would have adopted a different posture if he had been given the opportunity to serve as the president, running his own government and affairs.
To him, one of the difficulties Dr Bawumia faced during the campaign season was his inability to dissociate himself from the problems caused by the Akufo-Addo administration.
Mr Danquah further observed that one of the accusations against President Akufo-Addo was arrogance and abuse of power.
“But we all know Dr Bawumia, you can’t accuse him of arrogance, you can’t take his humility away from him. Akufo-Addo was also accused of being a divisive leader, that cannot be said about Bawumia,” he said.
In relation to the economic challenges, Mr Danquah maintained that things would have been done differently to resuscitate the economy under a Bawumia administration.
“It is only a matter of time and Ghanaians will appreciate what Bawumia was doing or what he would have done. I thought he would have been a good president or done far better than what Akufo-Addo did.”
He further expressed the hope that the president-elect, John Dramani Mahama will not fail Ghanaians.
The spokesperson of John Dramani Mahama, Joyce Bawah Mogtari also said Dr Mahamudu Bawaumia was at the receiving end of President Akufo-Addo’s failure.
Dr Mahamudu Bawumia earlier congratulated former President John Dramani Mahama for winning the general elections.
He indicated that per their own collated results Mr Mahama won the elections hence his congratulatory message.
In his concession address on Sunday, December 8, he said “Let me say the data indicate former president Mahama has won the presidential election decisively.
“The NDC has also won the parliamentary elections even though we await the final collation of seats.
“I just called H.E John Mahama to congratulate him.”
He said he “assured Mr Mahama of full support in the transition process so that the government business would continue seamlessly.”
