Access Bank Ghana has reiterated its resolve to commit to helping deprived communities across the country through its Employee Volunteering Programme (EVP).
The bank on Friday, October 26, 2018 lent an immense support to the Hamidu community by commissioning a new hand-pump borehole and renovating a faulty one for their health facility.
The gesture by Access Bank is expected to go a long way to improve the water situation in the community located in the Sekyere Afram Plains of the Ashanti region.
According to the World Health Organisation (WHO) in 2017, 2.1 billion people globally lacked access to safely managed drink water while 4.5 billion people also lacked safely managed sanitation services.
Also statistics available to Water.Org, indicate that in Ghana close to 6 million people, which is nearly 22 per cent rely on surface water to meet their daily water needs, leaving them vulnerable to water-related illness and diseases.
These are the many incidents that have premised institutions including Access Bank Ghana to do its part in reaching the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal 6 of improving access to clean water and sanitation.
Speaking to Ultimate Business after a handing over ceremony, Head of the Ashanti Cluster of Access Bank Ghana, Raheemat Boakye expressed their joy and satisfaction over their ability to embark on the Gh¢22,000 project; as the Hamidu community and 4 others close by drew water from a running stream.
“At Access Bank, corporate social responsibility is not only limited at the corporate level but it is actually brought down to individual level; that is from the Managing Director to even the driver in the organization.”
“Every year, employees of Access Bank contribute from their own salary and then identify a need in a community and do their best to support them.”
She added that “in the Hamidu township we’ve done two things, which is to refurbish the borehole at their health post and also construct this whole new from scratch. The total cost for what we have done here is around Gh¢22,000.”
Access Bank Ghana, the 2015 Best Bank in Corporate Social Responsibility, drew its employees for the EVP project from the Adum, Alabar, Amakom, Kejetia, Suame and KNUST branches respectively.
The Head of the Ashanti Cluster of Access Bank Ghana meanwhile admonished the residents to maintain the facility in good shape.
“It is very key and important for them to ensure that this continues to stay even beyond their lifetime if possible. There are students, teachers and people here and for them to walk long distances to fetch dirty water, this is sad.”
“They should keep it well and also make sure that they do not abuse the usage of it so that it can last longer”, Raheemat added.
The traditional leadership including school authorities in Hamidu on their part expressed gratitude to the team from Access Bank Ghana.
