The Plastic and Reconstructive Unit of the Surgery Directorate of Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH) is scheduled to observe this year’s Breast Reconstruction Awareness Day (BRA) on October 17, 2018 under the theme “Closing the loop on Breast Cancer Treatment”.
Speaking to newsmen in Kumasi, a Plastic Surgeon and Acting Head of the Unit Dr. Hoyte-Williams, said, as part of activities marking the day, the Unit is poised to restore hope and dignity to women who have undergone mastectomy (women with breast removed surgically).
He said his Unit has the Specialists and tools to give such women new breast through reconstructive breast surgeries.
Dr. Hoyte-Williams pointed out that from now till the October 17, 2018 the Plastic Surgery team will be stationed at the Breast Clinic Unit to take patients through counseling sections to allay their fears.
He therefore used the opportunity to entreat breast cancer patients to report early for treatment to increase their survival rate.
He used the opportunity to appeal to the general public to inform women whose breast has been removed surgically to report to the breast clinic on Monday October 22, 2018 for screening and possible selection to benefit from the breast reconstructive surgery.
The Plastic Surgeon disclosed it is sometimes worrying to hear stories about how women missed out on such opportunities when there is actually a life changing procedure through reconstructive surgery to restore their dignity as a complete woman after undergoing mastectomy.
He said, the Unit is very passionate about this cause and is therefore extending an invitation to every woman living with depression of post mastectomy defect (surgically removal of breast following cancer treatment) to come and know the options available to them since the procedure is meant to improve patient outcomes and quality of life.
