Two hundred and seven (207) people have died through road accidents in the Ashanti Region with a thousand four hundred (1,400) people sustaining injuries within the first half of the year 2018.
This figure is an increase of 36%in road accident fatalities as compared to the figures recorded in the same period in the year 2017.
This is according to statistics for accident between January and June released by the national road safety commission.
The region recorded a thousand two hundred and four (1,204) accident Cases in the first half of the year representing an increase of 17% compared to reported accident cases last year 2017.
Two thousand and thirty (2,030) vehicles 45% commercial, 42%private and 13%motorcycles and Tricycles were involved in the accident.
The Ashanti and Brong Ahafo Regional manager of the NRSC Ing. Samuel Assiama points out that 60% of the crushes happened at night.
He added that, ”Speeding ,Fatigue and drunk driving were among the leading causes recorded this year.”
The Crash prone roads where a majority of the accidents were reported were the Accra Kumasi Highway; Kumasi Sunyani highway and the Offinso- Techiman highway.
