The opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) in the Ashanti region has denied any official recognition of the group calling itself the ‘Hawks’.
The group of well built men were seen in their branded T-Shirts providing a semblance of security during the NDC’s unity walk held in Kumasi over the weekend.
Deputy General Secretary of the NDC in the Ashanti Region Kwame Zu points out that the NDC has not constituted a vigilante group with the said nomenclature.
He however alleges that the Hawks might be part of a group of disgruntled members of the Delta Force of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) who have approached the NDC to be allowed to work for the NDC.
He told host of the Ultimate Breakfast Lantam Papanko “we have had many occasions where aggrieved members of the Delta Forces of the NPP have visited us in our regional office with their desire to defect and join us as a political party. I will however not be surprised that if in an attempt to gain recognition in the ranks of our party, they chose to come together and to join the unity walk,”.
He added that there were also a number of identifiable groups that participated in the walk that were not known to the party.
Mr Zu also took a swipe at the media persons who highlighted the presence of the ‘Hawks’ asking them to “broaden their scope of notice ability.“
He insisted “there were many things to have been noticed at the unity walk. Key among them were the Concerned Small Scale Miners Association, the Head Porters Association, the Kejetia Market Women Association, the artisans from the Suame Market just as the Hawks”.
