The 4th MTN-Suncity Reading Project has ended in Sunyani the Brong Ahafo Region with a call on teachers and parents to inculcate the habit of reading into children.
Senior Manager Sustainability and Social Impact of MTN, Mr. Robert Kuzoe speaking at the programme said the MTN Reading Project is an educational initiative established in 2013 to provide interventions to encourage children between the ages of 8 and 14.
Mr. Robert Kuzoe also noted that the project is to stimulate the minds of these children through reading, to enhance their literary skills through the establishment of reading clubs and more importantly lead to improved academic performance of these students at the end of the day.
The MTN Foundation invested over GHC231, 325.00 into the provision of books, prizes, airing of the event and training of coordinators for the programme.
He commended the Coaches for the reading clubs, media partners and Municipal Education Directorate.
In the competition, Adwoa Anima of Holy Spirit School at Fiapre was first in the 11 to 14 years category, Nana Abena Kyere Duah and Samuel Afrifa both of Solomon Bennette Memorial School placed second and thirs respectively.
Martina Twenewa Twumasi also of Holy Spirit School emerged the winner at the 8 to 10 years category, Remi Duut of Solomon Bennette was second whiles Jessica Appiah Gyabaa Agape Preparatory School at Abesim was third.
All the winners took away Citi Call Tablets, Lenovo Laptop computers and Souvenirs. The finalists also took home citations.
Brong Ahafo Regional Director of the Ghana Library Authority, Frederic Noble Baada commended MTN-Suncity for the project this he noted would go a long way to help children to develop their reading habits.
Mr. Baada noted that inadequate space and staff is affecting the operations at the only public library in Sunyani and called for the completion of the library complex which was started ten years ago.
