The Biomedical Engineering Society-Ghana has called on the Ghana Health Service (GHS) to stop the practice where Medical Doctors operate and manage bio-medical equipment at Hospitals and Clinics in the country.
The association is attributing the practice to frequent breakdowns of hospital equipment across the country.
It is estimated that about 60% of medical equipment broken down are due to lack of biomedical experts to operate and service, creating huge financial loss to the country.
The Engineering Society- Ghana believes the phenomenon could change if government employs trained biomedical engineers at all hospitals to operate and service medical equipment instead of allowing Medical Doctors with little knowledge to operate such equipment.
This was said during the 2nd Annual General Meeting of Biomedical Society, Ghana held in Koforidua, Eastern Regional capital.
Speaking to Ghone News, President of the Society, Dr.Archibald Danquah Amoah said quality healthcare cannot be achieved in Ghana without Biomedical Engineers at the various hospitals adding that, globally healthcare is undergoing massive technological advancement with Biomedical Engineers pivot in its realization therefore imperative for Ghana to recognize the importance of Bio-Engineers in the healthcare system.
Prof Eric Kwasi Ofori, Dean for School of Allied Sciences, University of Health and Allied Sciences believes a highly qualified group of graduates can modify existing technology or develop new technologies, tailor-made for the Ghanaian healthcare system if government recognizes the Ghanaian trained Biomedical Engineers and provide them with advance training.
He said Biomedical Engineers are very critical to quality and effective healthcare delivery.
