Multinational Healthcare company, Johnson & Johnson is optimistic great strides will be made towards the fight against HIV/AIDS as it prepares to embark on clinical study to test a preventive two – vaccine combination in 2,600 Women in five Sub- Saharan African Countries (South Africa, Zambia, Zimbabwe, Mozambique and Malawi).
The Vaccine test will be done over the course of next three years. The first dose of the HIV vaccine is envisage to primes the human immune system while the second boosts the body’ s response.
The vaccine,according to the developers,combines protein from various HIV strains to form a “mosaic” capable of preventing infection from any wide range of viral strain.
It is estimated that, more than 70 million people worldwide have been diagnosed of HIV since discovered in the early 1980’s out of which over 35 million have died.
In 2016, estimated 1.8 million people became newly infected with the virus out of which 790,000 were recorded in Eastern and Southern Africa.
Speaking to Ghone news in Koforidua,Eastern Regional Capital of Ghana at commemoration of World AIDS Day,Johnson & Johnson’s Regional Executive Lead(Global Public Health ) for West Africa, Lynda Arthur said the vaccine developed is part of the company’s commitment to fighting the scourge of HIV/AIDS adding that the company believes the hope of the world without AIDS lies in preventing the disease in the first place.
The World AIDS Day commemoration program was on the theme “Know Your Status ,seek early Treatment, make HIV History” was organized by Johnson &Johnson in partnership with Ghana AIDS Commission, Planned Parenthood Association of Ghana (PPAG) and Youth Action Movement.
The Programme was attended with hundreds of teenagers and youth from across the region.
