Water and Sanitation Expert Prof. Oduro-Kwarteng has suggested to landlords and landladies in the country to provide toilet facilities in their various houses for their tenants.
A section of Ghanaians have always questioned why majority of landlords and landladies have refused to provide places of convenience for their tenants forcing them to defecate in the open.
Though there are a few public toilets in some of the cities and towns in the country, some tenants prefer to ease themselves in the open.
This he believes will help curb open defecation in some parts of the country.
He wondered why some Ghanaians defecate in the open especially in the bushes and around the beaches forgetting the health implications their actions pose to the lives of others.
Speaking on Ultimate Breakfast Show hosted by Lantam Papanko, Prof.Kwarteng urged individuals to support government with the provision of toilets especially in compound houses.
The Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) Senior Lecturer observed that some landlords have converted some of their toilet space into rooms for renting purposes.
‘Open defecation is a big problem in Ghana,… To tackle this problem, I think there is the need for attitudinal change. Individuals and households have to support government in a move to do away with open defecation.
‘Attitudinal change is one which has to do with everybody, those who defecate in the open should stop. The second thing that we have to do is provision of household toilets. Every house is supposed to have toilets. Our legislation requires that every house should have a toilet, but this is not the case, most of them especially compound houses have converted their toilet space into rooms for renting purposes, we have to reverse that kind of trend,’ he stated.
According to him, the subsidy for the construction of household toilets in some parts of the country is not enough.
‘…I think we need to scale up the construction of household toilets nationwide. Once, this is done, open defecation will be a thing of the past,’ he expressed hope.
He kicked against the idea of government providing public toilets for tenants saying public toilets should be constructed for travellers, in the markets and bus terminals.
‘Provision of public toilets should be for visitors, if people have decent toilets, they will not visit the public toilets. The public toilet is the root cause why landlords don’t want to construct toilets in their homes,’ he said.
He called for stringent laws for landlords who fail to provide decent toilet facilities for their tenants.
