Tempers flared in the chamber of Parliament when Electoral Commission (EC) Chairperson Mrs. Charlotte Osei appeared before the house to answer questions regarding monies accrued from media accreditation and replacement of voters ID cards during the 2016 elections.
Mrs. Osei who appeared with her deputies notable among them Amadu Sulley took her time to answer the question.
According to the EC Chair, an amount of 42713.60 realised from media accreditation, while 42713.60 cedis was used to pay for the printing of the cards.
Charlotte Osei also took time to answer questions from other MPs at the committee of the whole chaired by 1st deputy speaker Joseph Osei Owusu.
It was all smooth sailing until it got to the turn of majority leader Osei Kyei Mensah Bonsu when he used the word wasp to describe the minority’s response to his question which stalled the proceedings for a while with a demand of retraction and apology. The apology was to come later but in a conditional form.
The Suame MP’s questions unsettled the EC chair whose answer gave MPs an insight into the leadership crisis at the commission which has been playing out in the public.
The leadership of Parliament was to meet the chairperson and her deputies in an attempt to resolve the impasse which has led to a petition for impeachment currently before the Chief Justice.
However, the Minority Leader Haruna Iddrissu shot down the significance of such meeting given that the petition for impeachment of the EC is already before the CJ.
