The Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA) has attributed perennial flooding in the region to both human and engineering anomalies.
The past few weeks has seen flooding in some parts of Kumasi notably areas in Atonsu, South Suntreso, Abrepo and other low lining areas whenever it rains.
Metro Works Engineer with the KMA, Engineer Emmanuel Anderson told Ultimate News his outfit has realized engineering faults with the construction of some drains with others full of silt.
He however assured that the assembly is on course to put in all mitigation measures to prevent any disasters that might be occasioned by rain storms.
‘…we realised that most of the drains that have been constructed were heavily silted as a result of these human activities. When you take care of the vegetation cover and it rains, it carries lots of these silts into some of these drains. So we did our bit by desilting some of these streams, but we couldn’t do all…going forward what we are going to do is to remove some of these pipe culverts and replaced them with box culverts so the water can flow easily. We are doing lots of desilting, machines have been positioned at some suburbs for desilting,… we also have to do our bit so that the people don’t suffer unduly,’ he said
