The ‘abandoned’ Fufulso-Junction market in the Central Gonja District of Northern region, is now serving as a farm produce drying space for peasant farmers.
Farmers there are saddled with the challenge of drying and storage facilities which increase the risk of high post harvest loses in the predominantly farming community.
The market is one of the ultra modern ancillary projects of the Damongo-Fufulso-Sawla road constructed in 2014. The market though commissioned, it is still not in use due to some differences among community leaders over who should collect market tolls
The town of Fufulso is made up of two settlements; Fufulso and Junction with separate chiefs.
The Tamale-Kumasi highway separates these settlements from each other. By this, the market is situated in Junction.
During a visit by Alima Bawa, a local journalist to the market on Wednesday (a market day for the town) she met only three people who were there to dry groundnut, rice, maize, okro and pepper.
Braimah Afisha, a peasant farmer who had come to dry her maize told her they are quite relieved because the space makes their produce to dry faster than when they dry in their sandy compounds.
According to her, it would help them reduce post harvest loses especially with groundnut,
“Even when we dry our produce and rain falls on them, immediately the water evaporates and heat from the floor makes them dry even quicker than anticipated”, she revealed
Albeit the market is not serving its intended purpose, Afisha thinks it’s a blessing in disguise for the peasant farmers in Fufulso Junction.
Until the seemingly impasse between the two factions of the elders is resolved, the market will be left to deteriorate with little or no use.
