His excellency John Dramani Mahama has officially been sworn in as President of the Republic of Ghana for the next four years. The oath of office was administered by Chief Justice Gertrude Sackey Torkonoo during a presidential inauguration ceremony held at the Black Star Square in Accra on Tuesday, 7th January 2025.
The ceremony was attended by several dignitaries, including former Presidents Nana Akufo-Addo and John Agyekum Kufuor, Former Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, Speaker of Parliament Alban Bagbin, Members of Parliament, and thousands of Ghanaians.
The event also welcomed several heads of state and international delegations, including the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Bola Ahmed Tinubu, President of Sierra Leone Julius Maada Wonie Bio, and a delegation from the United States, among others.
John Mahama was declared the winner of the 2024 Presidential Election on Monday, 9th December. Based on results from 267 out of the 276 constituencies across the 16 regions, Mahama secured 6,328,397 votes (56.55%), while the candidate of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr Bawumia, received 4,657,304 votes (41.61%).
Ahead of Mr Mahama’s swearing-in, Professor Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang also took the oath as Ghana’s first female Vice President. Her inauguration represents a groundbreaking milestone in Ghana’s political history, breaking long-standing gender barriers and symbolising significant progress in a traditionally male-dominated political sphere.
In his acceptance speech, John Mahama pledged to be truthful to Ghanaians at all times and drive a reset of the economy.
He also highlighted the importance of gender equality, describing Professor Opoku-Agyemang’s new position as a pivotal moment to empower women and open doors of opportunities.
In his address, the President also promised to create a conducive environment for all businesses through the 24-hour economy.
