Three people have died and around 23 others were injured in an accident on the Cape Coast highway in the Central Region on Saturday, December 28, 2024.
The accident took place at the Residential Road Junction near Aggrey Memorial Zion Secondary School. It involved a Yutong bus with the registration number GW 6231-21.
The bus, which was travelling from Takoradi to Accra, was carrying 53 passengers when it tipped over onto its side, trapping some people underneath. A rescue team from the regional headquarters and the Cape Coast Metropolitan Fire Station rushed to the scene to help free those trapped.
Eyewitnesses reported that the team worked hard to rescue everyone, and the injured were taken to the Cape Coast Teaching Hospital and the University of Cape Coast Hospital for treatment. Currently, 23 survivors are being treated at the Cape Coast Teaching Hospital, while nine others have been treated and discharged.
The cause of the accident is not yet known, but an investigation is ongoing to determine what led to the crash.

24 hours later no update has been provided on the state of the 23 survivors receiving treatment at the Cape Coast Teaching Hospital.
Many Ghanaians have constantly complained about the deplorable state of the country’s road infrastructure and the absence of streetlights on major highways but this has fallen on the deaf ears of authorities.
Highways, particularly intercity highways, are simply not motorable and continue to pose a great threat to the lives of travellers.
With the festive season still in session, a lot needs to be done to ensure the safety of road users across the country. The next couple of weeks will be crucial as a lot of people who travelled to their hometowns for Christmas will be returning.
