The Tamale Sports Stadium has been rechristened Aliu Mahama Sports Stadium and this is how it cost government.
Deputy Minister of Youth and Sports Hon Sports Minister Pius Hadzide has revealed that the renaming of the Tamale Sports Stadium cost government GHC 100,000.
The Tamale Sports Stadium which was built prior to the 2008 African Cup of Nations (AFCON) has been rechristened the Aliu Mahama Sports Stadium to pay tribute to the late Vice President of the Republic of Ghana, who also served as director of Real Tamale United (RTU).
The Ministry of sports in renaming the stadium organised a football match between the Northern and Southern sectors and also bused school children to the grounds.
The deputy Sports Minister has disclosed that the cost of renaming the stadium cost government GHC 100,000.
“Late Aliu Mahama paid his due to the development of sports and even in the construction of the former Tamale Sports Stadium, now Aliu Mahama Stadium. So there were a series of activities that were organized to honor the hero.
“Organizational cost, the Trophy, beyond the trophy GH¢50,000 was at stake as the cash prize but we were very modest in our expenditure,” Hadzide told starrsportsgh.com.
Reports claimed the activities had been sponsored by McDan Shipping but the Minister denies.
“McDan did not give the Ministry of Sports one penny for any of the activities organized.
“A contingent of about 50 men stayed in Tamale for about a week, transportation, feeding and accommodation. The cost is a little over GH¢100,000,” he added.
