The association is raising the alarm following a surge in the public advertisements of certain unproven medical services by some traditional herbalists that actually require high level of medical and technical expertise.
The Ghana Medical Association (GMA) has warned of serious threats to public health if the relevant laws regarding the health sector are not strictly enforced.
The GMA’s warning comes in the wake of numerous unapproved medicines and drugs and related unproven services that are publicly advertised in the media without due diligence.

The GMA in a statement chronicled some of the services that got it alarmed to issue the caution.
“Such obnoxious and misleading advertisement was in one of the leading newspapers where it is stated that a massage parlour is offering treatment for cancer of the breast, brain, liver, kidneys, lungs, prostate among others in clear breach of the Public Health Act,” the statement said.

The GMA further expressed concern about how some of the individuals doing the advertisements and the media owners whose platforms are used for such adverts care much more about the financial gains they make at the expense of the health of unsuspecting members of the public.
The association’s major worry is about how some advertisements emphatically claim to be curing certain serious ailments that actually require high level of medical and technical expertise.
The association described these acts as “clear breach of the Public Health Act,” saying such public advertisements of unproven treatment, prevention and remedies for very serious ailments threaten the health and safety of Ghanaians.
