Serena Williams is also opening up about how she found out she was pregnant.
Serena Williams first tipped the world off that she was expecting after she accidentally posted a photo of her tiny baby bump on Snapchat with the words “20 weeks.”
Now, the tennis great has posed for Vanity Fair in a series of gorgeous photos highlighting her pregnant belly.
The photos showcase a different side of Serena, and they’re stunning. On the cover, she poses naked, while wearing a simple chain around her waist. She’s also photographed cuddling with her fiancé, Reddit co-founder Alexis Ohanian, and wearing a gorgeous orange caftan that hugs her pregnancy curves.

But Serena is equally revealing in the interview. She opened up for the first time about how she and Alexis met—they were eating at the same hotel restaurant, and Serena actually tried to get rid of him because he was sitting too close to her table.
“We were trying to get him to move and get out of there,” Serena said, remembering that her friend even made up a lie saying that there was a rat near Alexis' table. “He kind of refuses and he looks at us. And he’s like, ‘Is there really a rat here?’ ” At which point Serena remembers the first words she ever said to him. “No, we just don’t want you sitting there. We’re going to use that table.” His response: “I’m from Brooklyn. I see rats all the time.”
Obviously, they hit it off and things went up from there. In January, Serena says she took a pregnancy test while getting ready for an event and forgot about going back to see the results. “I went back to get dressed and I went back in the bathroom and I was like, ‘Oh yeah, that test,’” she said. Her initial reaction was shock. Serena says she “did a double take and my heart dropped. Like literally it dropped.” And then she thought about work: “’Oh my God, this can’t be—I’ve got to play a tournament. How am I going to play the Australian Open? I had planned on winning Wimbledon this year,’” she remembers thinking.
Of course, she went on to win the Australian Open while pregnant. She’s now taking some time off but says she plans to be back on the court by January. "It just doesn’t seem real. I don’t know why. Am I having a baby?" she told Vanity Fair. A friend added that she is "very determined" to start playing again.
Her stunning pregnancy cover and interview comes at an opportune time. Over the weekend, former tennis star John McEnroe told NPR on Sunday that he thought Serena was only the best female player, and that if she played in the men's circuit she’d be ranked “like No. 700 in the world." But then when asked if would be willing to play her, he clarified that he would now that she is pregnant—implying that pregnancy would make her a weaker opponent. Guess he forgot about the Australian Open...
Serena shared an epic response on Twitter, stating her respect for John but adding, "I've never played anyone ranked 'there' nor do I have time. Respect me and my privacy as I'm trying to have a baby. Good day sir."
Dear John, I adore and respect you but please please keep me out of your statements that are not factually based.
