Vodafone 60th Asantehene Golf Tournament got underway on Wednesday at the Kumasi Royal Golf Club with a ceremonial tee off by the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II.
More than 300 professional and amateur golfers from across the nation and the sub-region are taking part in the four-day 72-hole competition.
The opening ceremony, held amid color and grandeur, was attended by the Youth and Sports Minister, Mr. Isaac Kwame Asiamah and other high profile personalities including the Ashanti Regional Minister, Mr. Simon Osei-Mensah, and the Kumasi Metropolitan Chief Executive, Mr. Osei Asibey-Antwi.
Also on hand, was a powerful delegation of the headline sponsors Vodafone Ghana, led by the Board Chairman, Dr. Kobina Quansah, and the Chief Executive Officer (CEO), Madam Yolanda Cuba.
The ceremony began with flag hoisting by the military, watched by an enthusiastic crowd of golfers and spectators.
Mr. Asiamah repeated the determination of his ministry to give the needed attention, invest and to aggressively promote the lesser known sporting disciplines.
He indicated that the focus would not be on only football and that they were eager to make things happened.
The Minister said his presence at the golf tournament was indicative of the commitment to the development of the sport – to get more young people to play the game.
He noted that there was “a great opportunity in sports” and promised to aid the youth to unearth and fully exploit their talents.
Madam Cuba said the tournament was providing exciting and wonderful experience and that Vodafone was proud to be associated with it.
The tournament would end officially on Saturday and climaxed with a special dinner to be hosted by the Asantehene.
