A three-day workshop on quality improvement delivery for examiners of the Nurses and Midwifery Council is underway in Accra.
The workshop is also to equip them with the knowledge, skills and a change in attitude towards the profession.
Sixty participants and facilitators, including clinicians and nurse trainers with appreciable years of experience in the field of nursing and midwifery, are attending the workshop.
Mr Felix Nyantey, the Registrar of the Council, told the Ghana News Agency that the workshop was significant especially as it would help regulate the caliber of nurses and midwives trained to work in the hospitals.
He said the training was held every two years and structured to equip the examiners with the necessary skills to scrutinize the performance of the nurses and midwives who sought the Council’s licence to practice.
Mr Nyantey said: “You are serving as the gate keepers and if you do not keep the gates well, we will have chaff in our system.”
He urged them to keep the standard high to ensure that quality professionals were licensed to practice.
Mr Nyantey said the situation where some examiners acted unprofessionally was appalling and urged them to maintain high professional standards in their field of work.
Ms Felicia Asare Nyedu, a Tutor at the Ankaful Nursing Training College, and an examiner, said the workshop would help her to update her knowledge to make the necessary impact.
Mrs Patience Amponsah Boateng, a Tutor at Techiman Krobo Nursing and Midwifery Training College, and a facilitator at the workshop, expressed the hope that the training would equip participants with skills and techniques needed for quality examination of student-nurses.
