This year’s National Science and Maths Quiz is hoping for something new, the victory of a girls’ school.
Historically, the NSMQ has been dominated by all boys’ schools and one mixed school. But the Mawuko Girls Senior High School believe they can achieve what has never been done before – annex the trophy.
In an interview with Daniel Dadzie on Joy FM’s Super Morning Show, Rejoice Makafui and Salmata Abdul said they hope to win the contest and earn the bragging rights of being the first girls’ school to win the NSMQ.
The Head of Marketing and Communications of Prudential bank, Francese Baaba Ofori also prays for girls’ school victory but hopes it is her alma mater, Wesley Girls Senior High School.
“We are fasting and praying…. The national science and maths quiz is almost like an Indian movie, everything is in there, drama, action, suspense, you can never tell what will happen. So we are hoping for a girls’ school to break the jinx” she said.
Despite the enthusiasm to win, St. Marys Seminary/Senior High School, Lolobi boys are not ceding any space – they are determined to take the trophy home.
Derrick Clement and Isaiah Kumayi admitted to a tough and difficult preparation but are convinced they have done enough to beat 134 other schools, some of them veterans of the competition.
They wished the other teams a good competition and entreated them to try their very best.
The NSMQ2019 started today with Chemu Senior High School, St. Mary’s Sem./ Senior High School, lolobi and EPC Mawuko Girls’ Senior High School competing at the preliminary stages in the R.S Amegashie Auditorium. Winneba SHS, Apam SHS and Deboase SHTS started the contests at the New N Block.
