The Foundation for Generational Thinkers (FOGET) has held the Accra Global People’s Hub (Ghana’s chapter) of the United Nations’ Global People’s summit.
The event targets to boost the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) agenda to support the growth and development of the country.
The summit, which was run concurrently in some 190 cities across the globe online to ensure that people engaged in the Global People’s Summit of the UN General Assembly, was to ensure universal voices, inspire collaboration and foster innovation to solve developmental challenges.
The Accra s version brought together educationists, students, business operators, media, students and other stakeholders to brainstorm and make input into the global conversation dubbed “Re-imagine humanity: Inspire the future”.
Sylvia Sefakor Senu, an Economist Analyst with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) addressing participants last Saturday in Dansoman-Accra, indicated that SDGs are the continuation of the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs).
The targets of the SDGs are to end poverty, protect the planet and ensure all people enjoy peace and prosperity.
She described the SDGS as ambitious because they include new areas like climate change, economic inequality, innovation, sustainable consumption, peace and justice and among other important areas of considerations.
According to her, the goals are aimed at partnering the government and private sector, young and old and everyone wishing to do things differently for sustainable growth and development.
Sylvia pointed out that the success of the goals depends much on the youth collaboration to bring innovation, skills developments and sustainable living to realisation, urging the youth to make meaningful use of the internet and shun its associated crime activities like scams and hacking.
The economist urged the participants to reimagine humanity by reflecting on being “humility, conscious and empathic.”
Prosper Dan Afetsi, FOGET President on his part added that the organisation he heads is a trans-generational organisation committed to trumpeting the essence of leaving a worthy legacy for future generations.
He said the Accra Global Peoples’ Hub provides an opportunity to echo the challenges facing our country and the world and to contribute to solving them.
“Our vision is to empower lives, shape destinies, live out our mandate and be the voice that transcends generation. We carry our vision by inspiring, equipping, educating and challenging people to be responsible for the well-being of the next generation,” he said.
Other activities of the hub included panel discussions on science and technology and youth unemployment.
