The president, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has said he is aware of attempts by his opponents to mar his fight against corruption by calling him corrupt just to tarnish his image.
He said he remains resolute in the fight against corruption, determined to uphold the highest form of integrity that comes with his office and no amount of name calling will deter him.
Citing the age-old proverb while addressing a conference of Internal Auditors, the President said “I am aware that you give a dog a bad name in order to hang it, but this dog will not be hanged.”
The President won the admiration of many Ghanaians as well as local and international anti-graft institutions when he fulfilled his 2016 campaign promise to set up the Office of Special Prosecutor (OSP) to fight deep-seated corruption that has rendered many public institutions dysfunctional.
His choice for the OSP, Martin Amidu, is also a popular anti-corruption maverick who, while in public office in the erstwhile National Democratic Congress (NDC) government of President John Atta Mills, fought his superiors for preventing him to call out alleged corrupt officials.
The Minority in Parliament see the move as a witch hunt, while some have referred to the president and some members of his family as corrupt.
But the President says he will not be moved.
“I want to say that the stringent and desperate efforts being made by my political opponent to tarnish me and my family with corruption will simply not wash.
“I didn’t come into public life to make money out of public service and members of my family know fully well that they have to behave and are not involved in anything untoward,” he added.
Acknowledging that he cannot win the fight against corruption alone, the President said there are many layers of protecting the public purse and that requires the help from all.
President Akufo-Addo said he will not relent in his fight against corruption and promised to live up to expectation.
