He was elected at the 90th Annual General Meeting in Accra on the theme: “A responsible and sustainable mining industry; a partner for national development.
Mr Asubonteng takes over from Kwame Addo-Kufuor.
In a message to members of the Chamber before handing over officially as president, Kwame Addo-Kufuor commended the incoming president for his sterling performance as one of the best managing directors in the industry.
“As I bring my final address as president to an end, I would like to take the opportunity to commend our incoming president, the heads of our producing companies, service providers, contractors, exploration companies and all others who have worked in diverse ways to keep us relevant to our investors,” he said.
Prior to his election, Eric Asubonteng was the first vice president of the Ghana Chamber of Mines and a council member of the chamber.
He is currently the Managing Director of AngloGold Ashanti in charge of Obuasi and Messers.
He formally worked at Goldfields as a manager.
He has over ten years experience in the mining industry at managerial level.
Meanwhile addressing the members, Deputy Minister of Lands and Natural Resources Barbara Oteng Gyasi said government recognizes the contribution and appreciates the good work of member companies and other large-scale mining companies even though there is more room for improvement.
“Permit me to state that government recognizes your contribution and appreciates the good work of your member companies and other large-scale mining companies even though we all agree that there is more room for improvement,” she said.
She assured that as a business-friendly government, it has the interest of the private sector and would work to see the holistic growth and development of the sector.
