Healthcare is quickly becoming the fastest growing industry in Ghana. There are a lot of initiatives and investments that help push not only the scale of the healthcare industry but also the quality of healthcare services going forward.
The Health Ministry is set to provide political incentives for medium-to long-term growth as well.
The rapid growth of healthcare in the country means the demand for qualified doctors, physicians, nurses, and other healthcare service providers is also on the rise.
There are a lot of opportunities to explore in this industry, particularly for those who want to build a career in healthcare.
New Financial Initiatives
One of the leading causes of the sudden growth of healthcare industry in Ghana is the Ghanaian Health Ministry’s latest policy. The MOH will soon provide initiatives that address financing issues faced by the healthcare industry in the country.
The Director-General of the Ghana Health Service, Dr. Anthony Nsiah Asare, confirmed this plan in a meeting with the Methodist Health Professionals.
There will be measures put in place to better manage cost and improve the efficiency of health insurance across the board. Dr. Asare also hinted a step towards a more comprehensive health financing.
The delay in reimbursement has been crippling almost the entire healthcare industry.
It is a known problem that has haunted the country’s healthcare industry for years. The new set of initiatives will bring better financing and will help support healthcare as a whole.
More Investments in Healthcare
On another occasion, the Minister of Health, Mr. Kwaku Agyemang-Manu, also stated that the government expects the private sector to deliver better, more accurate, and more efficient healthcare services. Quality should always be the primary focus going forward.
“To this effect, the ministry has formed the Health Facility Regulatory Authority to regulate private healthcare services to ensure that their services are accurately and professionally delivered,” said Mr. Agyemang-Manu.
The statement was made while opening the Sunshine Healthcare Limited in Accra.
Sunshine Healthcare Limited is a specialist medical center that will provide high-quality services to more citizens. It was the result of a $2.8 million in foreign direct investment from India.
The Chief Executive Officer of the facility, Mr Bernard M. Joseph, agreed with the Minister of Health.
He said that the facility is committed to bringing the best and most affordable healthcare services possible.
More Nurses Are Needed
With new facilities being opened and the healthcare industry as a whole growing rapidly, it is not surprising to find the demand for healthcare professionals, especially nurses, growing just as quickly. Fortunately, more students are studying to become a nurse.
Distance learning programs are also helping more students enter the field. There are programs such as the BSN to DNP online from Regis College that allows students to earn a nurse practitioner doctorate degree from a university in the United States without having to relocate to the US.
These opportunities are enabling more students to pursue degrees in nursing; students that wouldn’t otherwise have the chance to enroll in a nursing program altogether.
The future of the healthcare industry in Ghana is looking bright.
