The Inspector General for the Nigeria Police Service, Ibrahim Kpotun Idris has revealed the arrest of a "billionaire kidnapper" to press home the need for bilateral intelligence sharing.
Speaking at the West Africa National Security Conference at the Kempinski Hotel in Accra, the Nigeria security chief said the kidnapper, Chikwudubem Onwuamadike was found to have a Ghanaian passport.
He said Nigerians have been celebrating the arrest of Chikwudubem Onwuamadike who also uses Evans to avoid the tongue-twisting name.
The arrest was made two weeks ago in Lagos state, Nigeria.
The Nigerian kidnapper was nabbed June 10, 2017 at the Murtala Mohammed International Airport while he was about to leave the country.
He has two houses in Accra and "his family is based in Ghana here", Kpotun Idris told the meeting of security officers.
Chikwudubem Onwuamadike aka Evans is a big name in Nigeria for notorious high-end kidnapping pull-offs.
According to Nigeria's IGP, Evans is an expensive hostage-taker who has at one time demanded $6m ransom for the release of his victim.
Websites in Nigeria chronicle details of several succesful kdnapping in which a demand for $1m was paid.
On June 16th, 2012 at about 11.am, a 35-year old Mbarikatta William Uboma was kidnapped on his arrival from Hungary while he was close to his house.
He was in his Toyota Car 2010 model in the company of his brother to drop him at his house when a Passat car emerged from nowhere and blocked his car.
They blindfolded him and forcefully abducted him to an unknown destination. They later demanded a ransom of N10M. However, N2M was later paid while they collected other personal accessories. He was finally dropped at Okota on the third day.
The IGP said the rich kidnapper accepts payments in instalments until the ransom is paid in full. Evans has also kept a hostage for half a year while waiting for a ransom to be paid.
He is also married to Uchenna Precious Onwuamadike who lives in Accra. They have five children.
She has told the Vanguard, “I was not aware that he was into kidnapping and all the criminal acts he has been associated with now".
"All I know about his business is that he was into haulage, buying engine and spare parts for trucks and imports exhaust pipes.
“That was what he told me. The reason he kept me in Ghana was because he said our children should get quality education".
