Ghana will send six males and two females boxers to participate in the first boxing ‘Road to Paris’ world qualification tournament slated for Busto Arsizio in Italy.
The competition will be held on March 4-11, and expected to attract close to 661 other boxers across the globe.
Ghana’s Chef de Mission for the Games, Mr Isaac Duah, who disclosed this to the Times Sports said the team would leave for Italy this week to chase qualification for the Olympic Games.
The team moved into residential camping at the University of Ghana, where all boxers would slug it out for a place for the Italy championship.
Expected to lead Ghana’s charge is Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games bronze medalist, Samuel Takyi.
Takyi, who wrote his name in Ghana’s Olympic Games folklore after ending the country’s 29-year wait for an Olympic medal, currently has his fellow light welterweight contender Joseph Commey, a silver medalist at the Commonwealth Games, to contend with for the slot for the Italy trials.
Mr Duah said the GOC would continue to give the boxing federation the much-needed support to make sure boxing makes a representation at the Games.
The Head Coach of the team, Akwasi Ofori Asare and his backroom staff are currently face a dilemma as to which boxer among the two should be given the nod.
