The Industrial and Commercial Workers’ Union (ICU), Ghana has commended the government for the revamp of Neoplan Ghana Limited (NGL), under the One District-One Factory (1D1F) initiative.
According to ICU-Ghana,such move would help employ thousands of workers and reducethe unemployment rate in the country.
The union has, therefore, called on the government to similarly revatalise struggling companies such as Volta Star Textiles Limited, Akosombo Industrial Company, Volta Aluminium Company Limited (VALCO), National Investment Bank (NIB) and Produce Buying Company to be operational.
The General Secretary of the ICU-Ghana, Mr Morgan Ayawine, gave the commendation at a meeting with journalists in Accra Wednesday, stating that the revamp was in the right direction and needed to be commended.
Those who attended the meeting included Mr Emmanuel Benimah, Deputy General Secretary in charge of Operations and Mr Samuel Ananga, Deputy General Secretary, Administration, of the ICU Ghana.
‘’With joy we receive the information concerning the revamp of Neoplan Ghana Limited. It has been a long struggle dating back 2018 when the leadership of the ICU-Ghana petitioned the President and urged him to recapitalise the Company,’” he said.
He said NGL was established in 1974 through the collaboration of Ghana and Germany with the objective of manufacturing and assembling buses to augment the transportation system of the country.
The General Secretary said the company at its peak in its glorious days employed over 800 workers who were members of the ICU.
“Neoplan Ghana could produce 12 buses a month but today the situation is that bad; no production is taking place as workers go to work and sit idle without job,’’ he said.
Mr Ayawine stated that currently both Kumasi and Accra regions’ strength of the workers stood at 50 and were insalary arrears of four months.
The General Secretary stated that out of frustration, some workers of NGL resigned or were sacked.
He called on the government to take plans to address the unemployment among the youth in the country, explaining that unemployment promoted crime.
Mr Ayawine gave the assurance of the commitment of ICU-Ghana in supporting the government to increase productivity in the country to help the growth of the economy.
It is recalled that President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo,during his tour of the Ashanti Region on Monday gave the assurance that Neoplan Ghana Limited would be revived under the 1D1F initiative.
