The management of the Northern Development Authority (NDA) has warned people who bought tractors, tricycles and other equipment from the then Savannah Accelerated Development Authority (SADA)without paying for them to, as matter of urgency, settle their indebtedness or face the full rigours of the law.
The Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of NDA, Dr Haroon Abdul-Majeed, revealed that majority of those who bought the tractors and tricycles on high purchase failed to settle their obligations.
This, he said was not only hampering the work of NDA but aggravating the poverty situation of the people in the area as it denied several others the opportunity to benefit from such facilities.
The CEO was addressing a press conference yesterday in Tamale over the state of affairs of NDA.
Dr Abdul-Majeed, disclosed that out of the total of GH¢34 million expected from the sale of some 5,000 tricycles procured by the defunct SADA in 2015, only little over GH¢1million was recovered as at yesterday.
He claimed that over 90 per cent of the money was still in the hands of individuals.
“We would use all available legal means to retrieve our money from beneficiaries,” he stated.
The CEO, therefore, advised all beneficiaries to honour their obligation as soon as possible to avoid being named and shamed.
“We are, by this urging, those who are still indebted to the authority to make efforts in settling their indebtedness before they are named and shamed,” Dr Abdul-Majeed emphasised.
The CEO said that it was disheartening that a project that was meant to help ameliorate the plight of the poor within the area had been abused in that manner.
Dr Abdul-Majeed also announced the intention of management to sell abandoned tricycles to the general public.
He mentioned that over 2,000 tricycles were left at the mercy of the weather by the defunct SADA management.
Dr Abdul-Majeed hinted that NDA in the coming days would roll out strategies to assist reduce poverty in the area and therefore called on the media to cooperate and collaborate with the authority to succeed.
