Government will construct an Olympic size sports complex for the 2023 All African Games competition to be held in Ghana, Deputy Minister for Youth and Sports, Mr. Perry Okudzeto has hinted.
Speaking at the Ghana Olympic Committee (GOC’s) meeting with the press in Accra on Friday, the Deputy Minister said, discussions are currently ongoing for the 60,000 capacity Olympic complex to be constructed ahead of the games.
“We are seeking cabinet approval and also looking for the right place to situate the complex. It would be a huge boost for sports development in the country, “he stated.
According to the Minister, Ghana is looking forward to hosting the rest of Africa and must therefore prepare very well to win medals.
“We need to prepare our athletes to make us proud when we host the African Games. The days where we only participate in competitions and win nothing should be a thing of the past, “he stated.
For that reason, he said, government was investing in the right infrastructure to ensure that athletes prepare very well and contest for all the medals at stake.
“There would be a conscious effort to look at all the sporting disciplines, develop the talents by putting in place a grading system for the athletes so they would be at the right level for the games.”
He urged journalists to put across very positive reportage on sports in the country in order to attract corporate sponsorships.
A media workshop, he said, would be organized occasionally to interact and share ideas towards the development of sports.
President of the GOC, Ben Nunoo Mensah added that the GOC was committed to supporting all disciplines to win medals for the country.
He also urged journalists to seek for the right information to feed the public on sports so a positive image would be created for Ghana’s sports.
