Rev.Dr.Kwabena Opuni-Frimpong,General Secretary of Christian Council
Former General Secretary of the Christian Council of Ghana, Rev. Dr Kwabena Opuni-Frimpong has advised Ghanaians to boycott the 2020 general elections if vigilante groups are not disbanded.
According to him no one should go out and vote if the NPP and NDC continue their ‘All-die-be-die’ and ‘Boot-for-Boot’ businesses.
Speaking in an interview, he expressed disappointment in the government for tolerating such illegality and feared Ghana could be plunged into chaos if such groups affiliated to the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) and the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) are not disbanded.
“Ghana is sitting on a time bomb since NDC and NPP are still using vigilante, because they are both beneficiaries therefore using them to their own advantage.
“What happened to President Akufo-Addo’s slogan (The battle is the Lord’s) adding it would have been better if former president Mahama did not make his ‘boot-for-boot’ comment.
Please in 2020 elections let’s allow Ghana’s democracy to work,” he bemoaned.
He blamed the NDC and NPP for giving legitimacy to such hoodlums to perpetrate violence during elections.
His comment came on the heels of the violence that happened during the Ayawaso West Wuogon by-elections which led to about six people sustaining gunshot wounds and a Member of Parliament for Ningo-Prampram, Sam George assaulted.
A taskforce, masked and heavily armed, stormed the residence of the candidate of the NDC at La-Bawalashie, shot and brutalised people indiscriminately.
It is not yet known what may have prompted the armed security personnel to shoot and injure people, but police have launched a full-scale investigation.
The government has also set up a commission of inquiry to investigate the incident – A former Commissioner of Human Rights and Administrative Justice (CHRAJ), Justice Emile Short is the Chairperson of the Commission while former Dean of the Faculty of Law of GIMPA and private legal practitioner, Mr. Ernest Kofi Abotsi has been appointed as Secretary to the Commission.
