Professor Emmanuel Ohene Afoakwa, Acting President, Ghana Technology University College (GTUC) says the institution is on course to becoming a fully fledged university.
“I am glad to inform you that the Ghana Technology University Bill, 2017 has gone through cabinet and is currently awaiting presentation to Parliament for passage into an Act,” Prof Afoakwa stated over the weekend at the 24th Matriculation Ceremony of the GTUC in Accra.
“This will make GTUC a fully-fledged public university. Great strides have been made in this regard and we are confident that our GTUC will soon attain public status this year,” he added.
At the ceremony, 350 fresh students were formally welcomed into the GTUC community of scholars to pursue various diploma and degree level programmes.
They were admitted into the Faculties of Computer and Information Systems, Engineering and IT Business.
Among the newly admitted students are 327 males and 23 females.
The GTUC new intake includes seven international students from six counties.
This brings the total undergraduate students population of GTUC to 4,917 composed of 258 foreign students from 14 countries and 4,659 Ghanaian students.
Prof Afoakwa noted that education was not just about the acquisition of knowledge, but it engenders honesty, respect, equality and compassion.
He said knowledge therefore, was awareness of knowing about what, why, when, where and how of anything, adding that “it is power, both intellectually and physically”.
He said in GTUC, technology was embedded in all aspects of their teaching and learning which makes their quest for knowledge more interactive, easy and fun for students.
He said that email, course-based websites, and computer-based chat rooms were some of the technology-enabled resources that were used by the university college.
“GTUC will seek to empower you to continue the search for knowledge through constant learning and innovation,” he said.
Prof Afoakwa brought to the attention of the students the importance of honesty and integrity in the university college.
“GTUC frowns on dishonest conduct and in this regard, the university college will verify all results submitted at the entry level,” he said.
“Our university prides itself with integrity, excellence and academic freedom as key core values that guide us in principle and in life.”
He also encouraged all students to learn hard to write exams that would be devoid of malpractices and dishonesty.
Prof Afoakwa said Barclays Bank Limited had also selected GTUC as one of its beneficiary universities of the Barclays Tertiary Scholarship.
He said the scholarship would be disbursed to selected students each academic year, stating that the tenure of the scholarship for beneficiary students was for one academic year, which was renewable subject to academic performance.
He noted that undergraduate regular students in levels 200-400 who had attained Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) of 3.0 by the end of the 2018/2019 academic year in addition to other eligibility requirements were likely to benefit from the scholarship.
The scholarship package covers academic facility user and hostel fees, all other approved fees, a laptop and feeding allowance for the duration of the academic year.
The package also includes mentorship opportunities like internship with the Bank.
To the matriculants, Prof Afoakwa said: “If you apply yourself, GTUC will enable you to be the entrepreneur, engineer, business administrator or the ICT professional you desire to become”.
“GTUC will become the place where your hidden talents will be discovered, and your known talents fine-tuned, so that you will become the person who will go out to make GTUC and the country proud, uplift and positively impact the entire world.”
Dr Julian Owusu-Ansah, Registrar, GTUC, formally administered the matriculation oath to the new entrants.
