A two-day national security stakeholders dialogue aimed at finding lasting solution to some of the security challenges confronting the country has opened in Peduase, in the Akuapim South District of the Eastern Region.
Key on the agenda are issues of political vigilantism, armed robbery, kidnapping and contract killings among others.
The dialogue organised under the auspices of the Ministry of National Security is the third to be held under the current administration and in attendance were heads of the various security agencies including the Ghana Armed Forces, Ghana Police Service, Ghana Immigration Service, the Ghana Prisons Service and the Bureau of National Investigations.
In addition to the security heads were the Ministers of Interior, Defence, National Security, Justice and Attorney General, security analysts and some civil society organisations.
Briefing the media on the sidelines of the event, the Minister of Information, Mr Kojo Oppong Nkrumah, said even though other issues of security concerns were on the table for discussion, the insecurity posed by increasing political vigilantism was the main issue of concern.
He said it was expected that a road map to help deal with vigilantism would be rolled out to ensure that the issue was dealt with once and for all.
MrOppong Nkrumah noted that though the issue of political vigilantism had been with us for decades, the President, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo was prepared to deal with it once and for all to ensure that there was peace in the country.
“The President is committed to end this canker and he feels the unfortunate incident which took place last Thursday during the Ayawaso West Wuogon by-election presents the opportunity for the country to deal with the issue once and for all,” he stressed.
He said the dialogue would also find ways to improve on the country’s security architecture to help improve security in general with emphasis on how to deal with the porous borders of the country.
Touching on the Commission of Inquiry set up to investigate the unfortunate incident, he said it was done in the best interest of Justice and peace and would in no way impair investigations by the police services.
He said it was important that all Ghanaians supported the government to find a lasting solution to the problem to ensure that the development of the country was not compromised in anyway.
