DVLA and NADMO officials inspecting one of the school buses
The Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority (DVLA) in collaboration with NADMO has impounded 25 school vehicles in the Berekum Municipality of the Brong Ahafo Region for varied offences.
The Authority detained the 25 school buses for infractions such as expired road worthy certificates and insurance and over-loading of school children among others.
The DVLA subsequently cautioned the offending schools and charged them to correct the glitches as soon as practicable or face the wrath of the Authority.
Speaking to the Ghanaian Times during the exercise, the Brong Ahafo Regional Manager of DVLA, Antwi Bosompem, said the Authority had wanted to hand over the offending school authorities to the MTTD of the police for onward prosecution but explained that the Berekum Divisional Police Commander, ACP. Ebenezer Ampofo, intervened, hence the caution notice.
The Regional DVLA boss said the exercise would be sustained to ensure that all unfit school buses were flushed out of the system.
On his part, the MCE for Berekum, Mr Kofi Adjei, in an interview said the exercise followed series of sensitisation for school proprietors in the municipality, on the need for them to adhere to vehicle licensing.
He therefore, advised school owners to ensure that they put their buses into good conditions, acquire all the requisite certifications and employ qualified drivers to avoid any untold story.
The MCE hinted that the Assembly would not hesitate to prefer punitive sanctions against any school proprietor who would refuse to abide by the rules.
The Berekum Municipal NADMO Director, Kwadwo Agyekum, stated that his outfit in conjunction with the Education Directorate would continue to sensitise school proprietors about the importance of prioritising the interest of children.
“We will not allow anybody to relegate the comfort and lives of school children in their selfish interest of maximising profit,” he said.
