Nkegbe with some executive members of IWA during the presentation
As part of activities marking the 70th Republic Day celebrations of India, the Indian Women’s Association (IWA) in Ghana has presented a new racing wheelchair worth $7000 to three-time Olympian, Raphael Botsyo Nkegbe.
The donation forms part of their drive to help the less privileged in society, specifically para sports.
IWA executives including its President, Mrs Cheema, Vice President Vinisha Daryanani and Secretary Mrs Sameena Thomas handed over the equipment to the Ghanaian athlete.
The donation is expected to boost Nkegbe’s quest to become the first Ghanaian male wheelchair specialist to win a gold medal at the All Africa Games later this year.
Dubbed ‘Botsyo for Gold,’ Nkegbe who has previously competed at Athens 2004, Beijing 2008 and London 2012 Olympic Games wants to make history this year.
Nkegbe said the new equipment will enhance his chances of winning laurels for the nation, adding that his old chair was almost six years old.
He said the new R1 wheelchair which was manufactured in the USA is the first of its kind in Africa and customised to his special new needs.
IWA hopes the new equipment would greatly aid Botsyo’s quest to win a gold medal at the upcoming All Africa Games.
IWA has in the past made donations to several charity causes in Ghana including the Rebecca Foundation’s ‘Save a Mother Save a Child’ project, digging bore holes for deprived societies, building class room blocks and their breast cancer awareness project.
