LEVANTE are taking their case against Barcelona to the Court of Arbitration for Sport after the Spanish football federation (RFEF) rejected their complaint about fielding an ineligible player.
A statement from the federation last week said head of the competition Carmen Perez had rejected Levante’s complaint against Barca for fielding defender Juan ‘Chumi’ Brandariz in their Copa del Rey last-16 second leg, when he was supposed to be serving a suspension because it arrived after the 48-hour deadline.
But Levante tweeted on Monday night: “Levante will file an appeal with the Court of Arbitration for Sport.”
Levante claimed Chumi was ineligible to play in the game on January 10, which they won 2-1, as he was serving a suspension for Barca’s B team, which he had earned in a third-tier game.
Barca spokesman Josep Vives said on Thursday that the club thought Chumi was eligible to play as they had seen a RFEF memo, which said suspensions incurred by players for a reserve team should be served in the division in which they usually play.
The Catalans, who have won the Copa del Rey four years in a row and a record 30 times, went through 4-2 on aggregate after a 3-0 win in the second leg.
Meanwhile, Kevin-Prince Boateng is in dreamland after joining Barca from Sassuolo on loan for the rest of the season.
He told Barca TV: “I’m very happy. It’s a big honour to be here and have the possibility to play for this great club. For every kid who starts to play football I think it is a dream to play for a club like Barcelona, so for every player and especially for me it’s a big dream come true.” - MailOnline
