The Forestry Commission (FC) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with China National Electronics Import & Export Corporation (CEIEC) for the establishment of a joint park project.
The park project, estimated at $3.5billion, would comprise industries such as forest cultivation and logging, wood processing and manufacturing, agro forestry, import and export trade among others.
The establishment of the Forestry Economic and Trade Co-operation Park “Joint Bureau” will be responsible for the implementation of the Ghana-China Forestry Economic and Trade Co-operation Park project to generate sustainable revenue through the use of forest resources scientifically.
China National Electronics Import & Export Corporation (CEIEC) is a Chinese state owned enterprise engaging in diversified business areas.
Mr Kwadwo Owusu Afriyie, Chief Executive of the FC, who signed for the commission in Accra yesterday, indicated that the bureau would ensure effective implementation of the park, its planning, design, as well as introducing investments, finding partners and to manage the operations of the park.
Mr Afriyie explained that the agreement sought to achieve sustainable revenue through using forest resources scientifically to develop various business portfolios in the park to facilitate activities that did not endanger the water, wildlife and forest resources and the environment.
Mr Liu Zhirong, Vice President of CEIEC, signing on behalf of his country, said the agreement would promote further co-operation in forestry development between the two countries, and expressed the hope that it would accelerate Ghana’s development in environmental protection, and improve economic well-being of the people.
He noted that the park would form a strong cluster of industries to improve on the efficiency of forests in the country, while expanding the employment rate and a sustainable green environment.
