A total of 48 persons drowned in the sea and other water bodies from January to date this year as against 68 the previous year, the Pathology Department of the Ghana Police Hospital has said.
A statement issued and signed by Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Yaw Nketia, Head of Public Relations of the hospital, said out of the 48 recorded cases, 10 were females.
On road accident, the statement said the hospital recorded 184 fatalities from January to date as against 193 last year.
‘”Thirteen of such pedestrian knock-down victims could not be identified. Members are therefore encouraged to always have in possession a form of identification card to help in easy tracing in case of emergencies,” the statement said.
The medical facility observed with great concern the increasing numbers of drowning fatalities during festivities and recreational events.
According to the statement, holidaymakers who go to beaches and other water bodies in the country should be security conscious, and avoid acts that would endanger their lives during this Christmas festivities.
The statement urged the public to avoid taking alcohol before swimming, and pay proper attention to swimming guidelines at such locations.
“Households should always close their water receptacles properly to protect their children from falling in them; also, parents and heads of educational Institutions should educate their ward on the dangers associated with water bodies,” it said.
Again, the statement called on organisers of entertainment centres near water bodies to provide the needed security during the Christmas season to ensure safety.
