The public must conserve energy and water as they are essential to human life, Mrs Gifty Bruce- Nelson, Greater Accra Regional Office Manager for the Public Utilities Regulatory Commission (PURC), has urged.
She said there was still the need to iron in bulk, switch off lights when not in use and to stop putting television sets on standby mode.
Addressing staff and students of the Chemu Senior High School (SHS) in the Tema Metropolis, Mrs Bruce-Nelson emphasised the need to avoid acts of illegal connections of electricity and water and report such illegal connections to the utility companies or the PURC for action.
Organised by the Commission, the programme was to create and sustain efforts of sensitising consumers on their rights and responsibilities.
The programme, dubbed, “Catch them young”, had staff and students of the Chemu (SHS) being educated on the formation of the PURC and its functions.
The Greater Accra Regional Office Manager said that their functions include the protection of interest of consumers and providers of utilities.
Mrs Bruce-Nelson said they also receive and investigate complaints and settle disputes between consumers and public utility companies, examine and approve water and electricity rates and also advise any person or authority in respect of any public utility issues.
She also advised the students to take their studies seriously to become responsible future leaders of the country.
