Mr. Daniel Alexander Nii-Noi Adumuah,MCE of ADMA
Within the last two years, the Adentan Municipal Assembly has trained 2,000 farmers in mushroom production to improve their income levels.
Under the programme, which is a collaboration between the assembly and the European Union (EU), a mushroom processing centre has been constructed and farmers trained in various techniques of mushroom production as part of efforts to diversify farming as a business and not a hobby.
The Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) of Adentan, Daniel Nii-Noi Adumuah announced this at a press soiree on Saturday.
He said the farmers, who have formed co-operative groups of between 20 and 25, produce wine and kebabs from mushroom which are in high demand.
Mr Adumuah said the assembly was spending GH¢1.4 million on fish farming, adding that about 1,000 households are engaged in fish production being undertaken in 22 water bodies across the municipality.
The project, he said, would not only put money into the pockets of the farmers but would help address the nutritional needs of the farmers and the people of the municipality.
The MCE said farming was another area farmers have shown interest and are assisted to improve nutrition and boost income levels.
Mr. Adumuah said a total of 68 farmers comprising 56 males and 12 males are into maize production in the municipality while 176, made up of 154 males and 22 females, are into vegetable farming in the area.
He said farmers were encouraged to preserve and conserve water bodies to support their farming activities and keep them in business as well as fight climate change which posed a threat to agricultural sustainability and development.
He commended the media for its support in highlighting the assembly’s activities for the year and called for more collaboration to move the assembly’s development agenda forward.
Mr Matthew Ayoo, News Editor of the Ghanaian Times on behalf of his colleagues pledged the media’s support for the assembly to help address the development challenges confronting the people.
