The Volta Region recorded a total of 182 fire outbreaks between January and October 2018 as against 199 the same period last year.
This represents a nine per cent reduction in fire outbreaks in the region.
The Volta Regional Commander of the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) ACFO Janet Agyeiwaa Duah announced this here in Ho at the weekend.
According to Mrs Duah, the drop in fire outbreaks in the region was as a result of increase in fire safety education.
She noted that in spite of this positive result there was the need by all stakeholders to continue to promote fire safety measures at all times to save precious lives and properties in the region during the harmattan season.
She cautioned hunters and people who set fire to the bush looking for rodents to be careful during this harmattan period to avoid bush fires.
She said the GNFS was committed to reducing fire outbreaks and its fatalities and tasked the public to avoid acts that could cause domestic fires.
ACFO Duah noted that the service in collaboration with the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) embarked on other safety education in flood prone areas in the region adding that “this will help minimise loss of lives and properties caused by floods.”
She said the region had 24 fire stations with the exception of Ho West District and personnel strength of 361 and two civilian employees.
She commended the personnel of the service for their hard work and said the fire service would continue to educate the public on best practices to ensure that the region was safe from fire.
