Miss Pearl Essuman, a philanthropist, in Ho, the Volta Regional capital, has paid the premium for 200 children and the aged, to enable them to access health care under the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS), at Adaklu Tsrefe in the Adaklu District.
She was supported by Meaningful Life International, a Christian non-governmental organisation (NGO), based in Tema.
According to Miss Essuman, there was the need to provide the health needs of children and the aged since they are vulnerable.
She commended Mr Kwame Agbodza, the Member of Parliament for the area, for his contribution to the improvement of health.
Miss Essuman said the exercise at Adaklu Tsrefe was a pilot one, and would be rolled out in other parts of the region.
She commended the National Health Insurance Authority for introducing the mobile renewal of NHIS registration by subscribers, saying it would reduce time spent by subscribers to renew their identification cards.
Mr Richard Santos Abada, Adaklu District Manager of the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS), noted that most of the beneficiaries were women, who failed to renew their cards when it expired, due to poverty.
He explained that if the card expired for more than three months before renewal, one had to wait for one month before it could be used it as penalty.
Mr Abada, therefore, appealed to NHIS beneficiaries to renew their cards on time to avoid embarrassment.
Mr Wahab Adams, project director of the NGO, said his outfit would continue to assist people get access to health.
