The renovated Gbewaa Palace
The Northern Regional Minister, Mr Salifu Saeed yesterday handed over the keys of the reconstructed Old Gbewaa Palace to the leadership of the Abudu gate, to kick start performance of the late Ya-Na Mahammudu Abdulai’s funeral which begins today.
The Abudus are expected to occupy the Old Gbewaa Palace to perform the funeral of the late chief in line with the roadmap on the resolution of the Dagbon protracted chieftaincy dispute.
The roadmap on the resolution of the decades old Dagbon chieftaincy crisis was drawn by the three eminent chiefs under the leadership of the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu, last month.
The roadmap was agreed to by the leaders of both the Abudu and Andani royal gates of the Dagbon chieftaincy divide.
The roadmap which many believe would help bring lasting solution to the intractable chieftaincy dispute was presented to the President, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo in the presence of leaders of both gates at the Jubilee House.
Under the roadmap Abudus are scheduled to perform the funeral of Ya-Na Mahammudu Abdulai from December 14 to December 28, 2018, while the Andanis are expected to perform the funeral of Ya-Na Yakubu Andani from January 4 to 18, 2019.
The elder son of the late Ya-Na Mahammudu Abdulai Boli-Lana Abdulai Mohammudu would today move to the palace as custom demands to perform certain rituals.
Handing over the keys to family members of the Abudu gate Mr Saeed assured them of government’s readiness to ensure the realisation of the roadmap.
The Minister, therefore, pleaded with the leadership to ensure compliance to the schedule of the road map.
Mr Saeed added that the Northern Regional Security Council (REGSEC) had beefed up the security personnel not only in Yendi but also at other vantage points in the entire Dagbon area.
He assured that REGSEC’s doors were open and entreated them to approach it anytime they needed any assistance during the performance of the funeral.
The Northern Regional Police Public Relations Officer (PRO), Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Mohammed Yussif Tanko, in an interview with the Ghanaian Times that said the security would intensify patrols to ensure an incident-free funeral performance for the two chiefs.
He added that security would be provided to all persons billed to perform any function or rites at the Gbewaa palace.
Meanwhile, the people of Yendi, traditional capital of Dagbon as well as sub chiefs are trooping to Yendi for the funeral.
Some businessmen particularly smock dealers have moved their business centres temporary to Yendi in order to make big sales during the period.
