Matthew Amponsah, a Chief State Attorney, yesterday told the Accra High Court that Gregory Francis Afoko and Alangdi Asabke poured acid on Adam Mahama, former Upper East Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP).
He said Afoko and his alleged accomplice, Alangdi Asabke, now on the run, went to the house of the deceased on a motorcycle on May 20, 2015, and carried out the alleged heinous act.
Mr. Amponsah suggested these to Afoko on the last day of cross-examination of the accused.
He said Afoko did not ‘drop off’ Asabke on his (Afoko) motorcycle in the night of the incident at a junction as Afoko said in his evidence in chief, but the two rode the motorcycle from Lovers Inn Drinks and Bar Spot at Bolgatanga, to the house of the late Mahama.
“I put it to you that on May 20,2015, after leaving the Lovers Inn Drinks and Bar Spot you did not drop Asabke at any junction, nor his house, but rather you continued with your rounds that night and went to the house of deceased and poured the acid on him,” the Chief State Attorney emphasised.
Afoko denied the assertions by counsel, and stated that he ‘dropped’ Asabke at a junction near his (Asabke) house before he rode home to check on his sick father.
Mr. Amponsah also told the court that Afoko did not give the keys to his room to the police when he was arrested on May 21, 2015, but Afoko said he gave the keys to police to conduct a search.
Prosecution told the court that the late Mahama was a contractor and lives at the Bolgatanga SSNIT Flats in the Upper East Region.
Mr. Amponsah said that on May 20, 2015, Mr Mahama left his house to his construction site in his pick-up vehicle with registration number NR 761-14.
The Chief State Attorney said the former NPP Upper East Regional Chairman returned home in the night, and at the entrance of his house, two men signaled him to roll down the side glass of his car.
The court heard that Mr. Mahama obliged, however, the two men poured acid on him and fled on a motorcycle.
Mr Amponsah said Mr Mahama shouted for help, and his wife, Hajia Zenabu Adam, went to his aid, and she received burns on her chest and breast in her bid to assist her husband.
According to Mr Amponsah, Mr Mahama told his wife that Gregory Afoko, and Asabke poured acid on him.
The court heard that neighbours were around when the late Mahama mentioned the names of the accused, as those who poured acid on him.
The Chief State Attorney said Mr Adams was rushed to the Intensive Care Unit of the Bolgatanga Hospital, where he passed on.
Gregory Afoko was arrested at about 2am in his house, and he led the police to Asabke’s house, but the alleged accomplice was not found.
A post-mortem conducted on the deceased by Dr Edusei indicated that Mr Mahama died of extensive acid burns.
