Mr. Isaac Saah
The Ga South Ghana National Fire Service Commander, Divisional Officer (DO) II. Isaac Saah, has cautioned drivers against use of domestic gas cylinders in their vehicles.
The Commander who was speaking during a training session for management of Jayee University College (JUC) said the practice by the drivers was very dangerous that could cause disaster and loss of lives and property.
“Removing and fixing of gas cylinders by especially commercial drivers can cause leakage because the drivers are not experts and the process can spark fire setting the car ablaze.” he said.
He said cylinders used by taxi drivers were even not appropriate because domestic cylinders were made to stand upright and not lying sideways.
Isaac Saah said the service would soon liaise with the Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU) to organise a seminar to educate drivers on the issues as well as educate the public on what to do when they smelt gas in vehicles they were travelling on.
The commander warned that drivers caught carrying domestic cylinders removed from their vehicles to filling stations would be arrested and handed over to the police for prosecution.
He said explosion of cylinders in commercial vehicles was becoming rampant in the country and needed stringent measures to check citing a case of several vehicles that were set ablaze because the cylinder in the booth was leaking.
Speaking on how ready his service was to combat fire during the dry season, Isaac Saah appealed to the public to adhere strictly to basic fire safety measures to help reduce the occurrence of fire outbreaks in the wake of the harmattan.
A section of the staff who participated in the training expressed gratitude to the authorities of the fire service command and management of JUC for the training workshop.
