The Upper East Regional Minister, Ms Paulina Patience Abayage, has observed that one way of curbing teenage pregnancies and early child marriage in the country was through the prioritisation of the girl child education.
The Upper East Regional Minister made the observation when a five-member member team and some staff of the Regional Directorate of the Ghana Broad Casting Corporation, Ura-Radio paid a courtesy call on her at the Regional Coordinating Council on Monday.
“There is the need to change the cultural perspective of our society regarding women and children and step up the education of the girl child. An educated girl-child becomes an educated women and an educated woman is an asset to society by all standards,” she stressed.
The Regional Minister stated that although there was the need for the boy child education, much attention must be placed on that of the girlchild up to the tertiary level since they were much disadvantaged.
The Regional Minister expressed appreciation for the visit and said she had all her media skills from Ura-Radio. She also indicated that as a Media Practitioner herself, she was aware of the important role of the media and would utilise it to develop the region.
“Since Ura-Radio broadcasts in 5 local dialects and English and goes far, it will remain one of the official mouth piece of the region in addition to the other radio stations,” she stressed.
Ms Abayage stated that she would operate an open door policy and therefore called for constructive criticisms from all stakeholders to enable her run the region properly.
She mentioned that the region had numerous potentials that could be explored for the acceleration of the development of the area and cited guinea fowls rearing, small and large ruminants, irrigation and Planting for Food and Jobs, among others as some of the potentials.
She stated that the region’s potentials was in line with the President’s vision for the country and gave the assurance that everything would be done to ensure such potentials were given the needed boost.
‘’The region can tap into the budget for its share especially in the area of Agriculture, education and roads. The budget will also support ongoing projects in the region which include the Bongo, the Balungu bridge, the Bolga –Bawku, Sandema and Chuchuliga roads will also be worked on,” she assured.
Ms Abayage stated that plans were also underway to get contractors to work on all the street and traffic lights in the region particularly the regional capital, Bolgatanga.
The team which was led by the Acting Regional Director of Ura-Radio, Mr David Nab, congratulated the Regional Minister who had ever worked with the Radio Station sometime back.
They indicated that the Regional Minister’s elevation to the political position came as an honour to the station and the people of Upper East Region in general and assured the Minister of their readiness to support her in the development of the Region.
