The Bawku West District Assembly has for the sixth time failed to elect a Presiding Member (PM).
After 12 rounds of voting, none of the two contestants, Jacob Kwabena Atinga and Moses Agana Appiah, could secure the mandatory two-thirds majority votes.
To be deemed elected, a candidate will need to get the votes of 32 members of the 48-member assembly but Mr Appiah polled 28 votes of members voting for him, not enough to cross the legally required threshold while Mr Atinga garnered 20 votes.
The pair had been battling to replace the former Presiding Member, whose appointment was revoked by the President with 10 divisional chiefs in the Bawku West District present to observe the election that ended inconclusively.
Naba Issifu Akebenlingo II, the Divisional Chief of the Tili traditional area, on behalf of the chiefs, urged the assembly members to overcome their differences and find a common ground saying, “You should put the development of the area ahead of any other interest.
“Remember you will go back to the people to seek the renewal of their mandate in 2019 and there should not be time wasting,” he said.
Madam Victoria Ayamba, the District Chief Executive, said the assembly needed to put in place structures to facilitate development and the presiding member, was important to its effective and efficient operation.
“We urgently require a presiding member to enable the assembly to reconstitute the various sub-committees to facilitate decision-making and implementation of development projects and programmes.
Frank Fusieni Adongo, the Deputy Upper East Regional Minister and Member of Parliament for Zebilla, pleaded with the assembly members to move away from their entrenched positions and unanimously elect a presiding member to accelerate development to ameliorate the plight of residents. -GNA
