The Northern Regional Manager of the Road Safety Commission, Mr. Alexander Ayatah has expressed worry that 147 people have died through motor accidents in the region between January and September this year.
Mr. Ayatah said that 110 out of the 147 deaths, were under eighteen years, and lamented that it was very difficult to enforce road traffic regulation in the region as the political leaders and chiefs were so quick to come to the aid of offenders.
He made these observations at a road safety stakeholders meeting, aimed at soliciting support from stakeholders to help stop road accidents, in Tamale, in the region.
Mr. Ayatah said “the two big parties; the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) and National Democratic Congress (NDC) are guilty of interference”, adding that
underage people drive vehicles in the region, particularly in Tamale.
He said some commercial drivers and motorcycle riders operated without licences, and did not know the road signs.
Mr. Ayatah also complained about the ‘flooding’ of tricycles, popularly known as “yellow, yellow” on the major roads.
Mr. Abdul-Razak Shani, Northern Regional Director of the National Commission for Civic Education urged journalists to help address road accidents.
He said journalists should name and shame politicians and chiefs who attempt to secure the release of road traffic offenders.
