There was pandemonium at the Northern Regional Police Command, in Tamale, when the police fired warning shots to disperse the teeming crowd that had stormed the station to free a suspect in the police cells.
People who doing business close to the Regional Police Command took cover while others fled when the police fired several shots to scare the intruders.
Some traders fled leaving behind their wares and items for about 40 minutes before returning for their property.
The Northern Regional Public Relations Office of the Police (PRO), Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Mohammed Yussif Tanko, confirmed the incident to the Ghanaian Times in an interview yesterday.
He stated that the suspect was arrested by the police following a report the youth had destroyed hundred bags of cement belonging to an estate developer.
DSP Tanko stated that the group also chased workers of a developer at the site with the excuse that the estate developer had encroached on the land.
He said that while the police had detained the suspect to assist in investigations some people massed up at the station and attempted to free the suspect.
DSP Tanko said that four of those who besieged the station were arrested and were helping the police in investigations.
He denied the allegation that some intruders were injured during the riots.
